In True Notebook Mark talks about when he is at home with his two cats who distracts him from his writing. Is there something that distracts you from your writing responses or from doing different activities you do at home? Describe. How do you avoid that distraction?

  1. Mostly everything distracts when I'm trying to write. I can't concentrate on my thoughts when something is going on when I'm writing be that music, the TV or even talking. I just can't seem to concentrate. When I write I usually shut my door so nothing can bother me. I put my phone on silent and if it rings I don't hear it so I ignore it. I need complete and utter silence when I write. No distractions or anything all I need is silence.

  2. Something that distracts me from writing is when I listen to music. When I listen to music I zone out and I automatically get up and dance. I have to watch myself sometimes because I get so wrapped up in the songs. I tend to procrastinate when I listen to music so its pretty distracting. Listening to music makes me want to get up and move and feel free. When I come back to my paper it would be late at night by the time I finsh. Music is my distraction when it comes to writing a paper.

  3. My distraction would have to be when I am writing in the kitchen and my mother is cooking. The smell of the food that my mother prepares makes me want to stop what I am doing and hurry up and grab a plate. I enjoy sitting in the kitchen writing, I really don’t know why either. So to avoid myself of stopping or pausing to embrace the smell, I always have a Coke Cola and some crackers. It takes my mind off of what is going on in the kitchen.

  4. I think everybody gets distracted at some point in their writing but they just have to keep pushing in order to finish. For me I know I cannot be around any music and interesting conversations with people around me. I know almost every song and if my radio or iPod is in my ears I cannot concentrate on what I want to say because I will start singing the words and have to go back on what I last said. I’ve tried this before because for some people it helps but for me it just won’t work. I will say I’ve done it before with a song I’m not very familiar with or a song I was familiar with but my volume was so low, it was almost as if my music was drowned out. That same thing goes with interesting conversations or text messages. It’s only if I am in a deep discussion that I will take the time out to answer a text message and beak from my writing. Any other casual conversation I will wait until the end of my paragraph or thought. At times I tend to listen to a conversation that does not really involve me. Not because I’m trying to be nosey but it’s just a force of habit, I usually don’t even care. But once I am listening with friends or family, I will take part in the conversation and stop my writing. From that point ill loose interest in my paper and gain interest in the discussion then come back to my writing later. Personally it is all about my thought process when I am writing. If I am elaborating on a topic and I have a great creative thought processes going, once it is broken it can be so hard for me to come back to it. This is why I always write in my room alone. No music, no people, no sound. Just me and my Mac computer screen.

  5. When always at home I get distracted depending on what I’m already doing at home. Distraction is the process in which one or something attention is taken away. When at home and I’m doing something I normally do I get distracted by my little sister. My little sister always talks to me when doing something important like making my dances up or doing homework. She is making this conversation about something that doesn’t matter or do matter and I get distracted and fall for it. But now I just put my music on and do what I got to do and don’t pay attention right at that moment. I either tell who ever is distracting me to tell me later or whenever I’m free. Most of the time the little things that distract me is my cell phone sometimes because I tend to answer it no matter what and where I’m at. I try to put it on silent so I don’t hear the vibration or ringtone but I just see it light up and I go to it. Also, my three baby cats distract me because they are so adorable and makes me want to play with them and then I fall for those eyes and purr and I play to we get tired and we fall asleep. Now I don’t let anything get in the way of me doing things. When writing I get distracted when I wonder off in space and I start thinking about other things and things that surrounds me.

  6. When I write I have to be really focus I can’t have the television or the music playing it throw me off totally I need quietness while I’m working. Although some people are different like my older brother I’ve seen him actually read a book with an IPod in his ear I don’t understand. But I guess everyone’s different. I find it very relaxing when I can focus in quietness.

  7. When I am at home trying to type my paper, the one thing that distracts me the most is facebook. I really could not even tell you why. I can sit there for a good hour and just find myself just surfing facebook. I will snap out of it at one point and be like, “What am I doing?” There are other times where I will drift off and go look at clothes online as well. It could also be another case where one of my friends that are away at school will Skype me. That is another good hour. As you can see, it is the internet that is my distraction.

  8. The atmosphere that surrounds where I try to do my work would be distracting to anyone. My room in my dorm is where I try to do my writing. The fact that I don’t have a working laptop isn’t doing anything for me either. I usually have to wait till late at night to find one of my floor mate’s laptops to use. The thing is most of the time they are all doing their papers at that time to. I’m one of the most popular individuals on that floor so people are always looking for me. They always want to talk or go somewhere or do something it’s very distracting. When I finally get the chance to sit down and get started on my work my mind often wonders to other things. The best option for me is to distance myself from that hectic surrounding and maybe go to the library or somewhere else quiet.

  9. When I do my writing responds, working on my zine, and working on fliers I always get distracted. My distractions are facebook, records, my friends, my family, or just the internet. When I do my writing responds I will always have up FireFox and have it to Facebook because I think someone will get on and try Facebook messaging me and that also gets me distracted. Another thing that distracts me from my writing responds and zine are my records because I do like the silence in my room, but I do love listening to my records at the same time I work and it distracts me because I will end up reading the lyrics and looking at the art of the album. My friends are the biggest distraction when I work on my zine and fliers. They are playing on my Xbox and yelling at me or they want to go on my laptop and it doesn’t help if you have no computer and you’re using Photoshop to make a flier or working on picture for a zine. My family is also a big distraction because my mom is always calling me for dinner, to do the dishes or she will come in my room and say this is wrong and that is wrong. To stop those distractions I turn on my internet on my laptop so I don’t get a Facebook message. I have to tell myself I need to get this done and put all my record away. For my friend and family I wait till my friends leave and I just tell my mom I need to work alone and she can see it when I’m finished.

  10. I get distracted very easily by people looking at me in my eyes and when people talk because I can’t concentrate on what I want to do or say. When it comes down to writing a paper I love to write, especially about me but think about what will people say about my writing. I am very self-conscious when it comes down to writing a paper for school because I feel no one will understand my work but me. I have always feared writing papers for school because I am shy and was never good in English. The only way I can get over my fear is by not worrying about my distractions, ask questions about my paper if I need help.

  11. Lots of things distract me from my writing. I can even be in a quiet room with nothing but a pen or pencil and a blank piece of paper, and end up distracting myself anyway. Sometimes it just takes a little will power for me. I mean I can't work in a loud place of course. Sometimes people just talking behind me like right now can distract me. I'm not entirely sure what it is that gets me in tune with my work or anything else, but it's something that required lots of practice for me to accomplish.
